This season, you make the rules. Design trends are out of the ordinary with personal taste setting the tone. Bathroom Bizarre shares a few secrets on how to create a warm, funky bathroom.
Make a statement
Use black and white as the backdrop to create a striking, confident mood. The bathroom is the one place in the home where this cheeky colour combination is most easy to apply, as both white and black sanitaryware is bang on trend. A great place to start the black-and-white scheme is on the floor: utilise the colour black first as it grounds and anchors the various elements, and use it in a demarcated area to accent the lines of the white bathroom fixtures. To add interest (and to make the floor safer), select tiles with a slight texture.
Plan ahead
The bathroom is one of the most costly rooms in the house to re-vamp. With this in mind, plan for future changes.
Take your time when selecting the sanitaryware and floor tiles as these are expensive to replace and, ideally, should last from one makeover to the next. Don’t skimp on the taps. Rather shop around and choose exactly what you like. And keep floor tiles as neutral as possible – floor mats and carpets are an excellent way to add warmth and colour to the room.
A splash of colour
In the pictures shown above, you’ll note that the toilet area has been screened off from the rest of the bathroom with a bright red feature wall (Plascon’s Red Flame, code R7-A1), adding privacy and vibrancy.
Changing the colour of the wall, towels and accessories provides an easy opportunity to change the entire look of the room. Here, the red colour is echoed in the striking chandelier.
The devil’s in the details
When choosing the sanitaryware for an arty, eye-catching look, go for something completely unique. Choose items that have a sculptural quality and which won’t date. The free-standing Amalfi bath from Bathroom Bizarre pictured in the gallery is one example of a bath that makes a statement.
Add some funk
Personalise the space by adding a couple of ornamental pieces. An over-sized duck poster, made from a blown-up photograph, breaks the black wall and adds interest to the bathroom pictured above. The curvy white enamelled Louis XVl-inspired reproduction dresser adds a feminine touch and provides added storage space, as well as a surface for flowers and other ornaments.
