Couch potato

WORDS Malibongwe Tyilo

‘Tis the season for finding a couch and impersonating a potato – while you page through the new Summer VISI 69, of course. Or perhaps you’ll be travelling between family and friends, couch surfing the youngins call it. Well, we’ve lost our hearts to these delightful patchwork Bokja sofas that bring together vintage and contemporary.

Bokja is an eclectic range of patterned couches by Beirut-based duo Hoda Baroudi and Maria Hibri. They combine classic vintage furniture shapes with old and new textiles and tapestries. The vibrant results ensure that the couch is once again the centrepiece of a living room, or any room for that matter. In fact, we would go as far as saying that one of these should be the piece you buy when seeking inspiration for the rest of your interior colour palette.

Lively prints and patterns make these couches far more exciting than mere seating objects, and we’re not
the only ones smitten with them either: Madonna has Bokja couches in her Hard Candy juice bar in Moscow, Christian Louboutin has them in his footwear showrooms across the world, Manolo Blahnik, Sandra Bullock… the list of famous fans goes on.

The prolific duo also creates one-off designs in collaboration with other artisans, many of which have been shown as art installations in galleries internationally. We certainly wouldn’t mind if Bokja installed its distinctive brand in our offices at the tip of Africa.
