Local studio Collectic Living, headed up by designer and Design Indaba 2020 Emerging Creative Fazlin Hoosain, focuses on sustainability and upcycling, from striking oak-and-steel side stables and marble-clad mirrors to leather-and-wood bags.
After coming across discarded marble offcuts while working on a kitchen project, Fazlin decided to do some investigating into the lifecycle of excess materials made by the furniture industry. She found that while the larger offcuts were resold, those deemed too small or imperfect were discarded. And so the aptly-named Phoenix Range was born: A bold, contemporary collection of upcycled marble furniture made up of four side tables and two mirrors. Each design is one-of-a-kind and hand-made in Cape Town.
Fazlin is also behind the design of the brand’s sustainable bag collection. The Collectic Collection 001, which is also hand-made in Cape Town, is manufactured using leftover upholstery leather and oak and walnut offcuts. “I was exposed to the clothing industry from an early age,” she says. “My grandmother owned a CMT factory, which employed most of my family members. Even though I am in the interior design industry, I always knew I would dabble in clothing or handbag design.”
Collectic Living forms part of Collectic, the parent brand of both Collectic Living and Collectic Interiors – a full turn-key interior design service that caters to both the residential and commercial industry.
