Clever Design: Seashore Chapel

WORDS Lindi Brownell Meiring IMAGES Chen Hao

Beijing-based studio Vector Architects has designed and built a seaside chapel that works in sync with nature.

Situated on a beach in Beidaihe, China, the chapel was built on two concrete plinths to allow seawater to pass underneath the building when the tide comes in.

The 270sqm chapel’s concrete facade is covered in white stucco on both the external and internal walls. Simple interiors make up the space, including bamboo flooring and wooden benches.

Led by architect Gong Dong, Vector Architects also completed a seaside library in the Chinese town of Nandaihe, seen below.
