The saneness of the kitchen defines the fret-free living of a household. No wonder that, when she discovered she was pregnant, blogger Kim Gray knew she needed a fresh kitchen to set the tone for her new family. We featured the kitchen in the new Summer VISI 69 and here are the before pics.

How did you go about designing your new kitchen?
I spend a lot if time on Pinterest searching for inspiration for my blogs and I began a love affair with metro tiles and clean, minimal spaces. My kitchen has not changed since we bought the house three or four years ago, and I wanted to update the “country cottage” feel to something a bit more contemporary. I wasn’t in a position to change the cupboards, so I had to be careful not to go too modern as that would have dated them even more.

What are some of the things you learnt along the way?
Old houses are not built at right angles! The tiles had to be cheated to look straight. Also, there needs to be clear, open communication when using different suppliers and playing project manager. Don’t assume people know what you have in mind.

What is your favourite aspect of your new kitchen?
The kitchen tops from Womag are a far cry from my old wooden tops and are so beautiful. But I’ve also dreamed of metro tiles for a while now, so these from Tile Africa have to be my highlight.

Any advice for readers?
Although this was not a big job, be prepared to have no kitchen for at least two weeks.
