Joburg’s Melrose Arch Piazza has been transformed by KFC into an interactive art installation that will not only mesmerise visitors but also fill the tummies of hungry children around the country.
As part of their ADD HOPE campaign KFC has installed the Wall of hope, a thought-provoking piece forged from stee in the Melrose Arch Piazza. The wall consists of 5500 silhouetted childlike figures, each with an empty tummy.
Standing at 1.8 metres high and 115 meters long, the interconnected panels bend around the Piazza to form what from ground level appears to be a maze, but from above writes out a word that this initiative has made reality in so many children’s lives: Hope.
The South African public are encouraged to participate and interact with the installation by dropping a R2 coin into the empty bellies, which will go to the fast food chain’s feeding scheme. The installation will be up until 6 November 2011
It is initiatives like this that prove a South African city is worthy of the title World Design Capital 2014, and highlights the ways in which intelligent, creative design can be implemented for the benefit of society. Make sure you get down to Melrose Arch before the end of Friday and do your part to feed at least some of the countless hungry children in our country.
