New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) has added a “4D printed” 4D Kinematics dress to its permanent collection.

The Kinematics Dress, created by design studio Nervous System and 3D printed by Shapeways, is made by printing compressed 3D interlocking components, connected to each other by interlocking joints that unfold into their intended shape only after the printing process.

“The garments that we’ve designed can only expand to their full size after being removed from the printer and they do so automatically, no assembly is required,” says creative director Jessica Rosenkrantz.

The dress comes with app software that customises the design and a video (below) demonstrating the idea. Fascinating!
