Winning streak

Between the KZN Institute for Architecture (KZNIA) Awards and the Cape Institute for Architecture (CIA) Awards, local legends Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen Architects scooped three awards for some of their recent work in South Africa and abroad.

At the KZNIA Awards, Stefan Antoni’s House Duke in the Hawaan Forest Estate was a winner. The sleek, modern house sits at the edge of a forest and is angled towards the trees on either end, to provide a sense of enclosure and privacy. The hub of the house is a central high-volume living space, which was designed as a light-filled, airy pavilion that opens fully onto the outdoor terrace and forest area.

The firm’s two winning designs at the CIA Awards were their Voelklip beach house in Hermanus and House Sow on Lake Geneva in Switzerland.

The Voelklip house features a split-level living space that allows sea views for the lounge, dining room and bedrooms. The kitchen and living room open up completely to the patio, pool and deck, while the indoor/outdoor braai room overlooks the rim-flow pool and opens onto an intimate courtyard and water feature with stepping stones.

House Sow, meanwhile is a dramatic contemporary residence and office overlooking Lake Geneva in Switzerland. The design makes use of strong sculptural forms and lines, bold colours, and abundant glass. The main house is joined to the annex with a 20-metre wide view corridor, and cinemas, a spa, an auditorium and garages below link the two buildings.
