Wood’s inner glow

Sometimes designs seem like our childhood imaginations made real. Comprising golden beams of light emitting from cracked logs, Italian designer Marco Stefanelli’s Brecce Collection is such a design.

The magical light is the result of Stefanelli implanting LEDs and wires into the cracked wood and then casting the cavities in resin. Each light is handmade, skillfully realised by artisans who are sensitive to each piece of wood’s inner light. The pieces of wood are individually sourced from sawmills, urban architecture cut-offs, riverbeds and, even, piles of firewood.

Stefanelli explains that he considers these pieces of wood to have reached the final step in their life. “I have tried to give these pieces a second chance, tempting to make the light come out from the material and to amplify the sensorial experience,” he goes on.

Many of the pieces can have multiple functions including decorative lighting, stool, foot rest or side table.
