Retro-techno alarm clock

WORDS: Michelle Coburn

The VISI team loves the way nostalgia meets new technology in Areaware’s clever Alarm Dock, which turns the iPhone or iPod Touch into an alarm clock for the bedside table.

This simple design by New York City-based industrial designer, Jonas Damon of Frog Design, was inspired by the faux wood-grain General Electric flip clocks that stood atop many a bedside table in the seventies and eighties. Damon created the neat frame with rounded edges out of sustainably harvested beech wood.

The Alarm Dock contains none of the inner workings and wirings of a regular clock – that’s all up to your iPhone (3G, 3GS and 4) or iPod. Simply download a flip-clock app and bring the memories of yesteryear back to life. The iPhone or iPod’s dock connector can be pulled through the Alarm Dock, allowing your device to recharge while it’s docked.

“Mindful (but not wistful) of things past. Challenging expectations. Creating useful and poetic objects that inspire an emotional response. Encouraging a dialogue between people and their everyday surroundings.” Here at VISI, we think Jonas Damon’s creation suits Areaware’s manifesto quite perfectly.
