Katrin Lewinsky moves so fluidly between disciplines that Joburg’s creative scene just wouldn’t be the same without her.
Her positions include project co-ordinator of the Architecture.ZA2010 festival, curator of Co-Op gallery and co-director of the Goodman Gallery. She spoke to VISI about her latest venture as co-creative director of Noir Tailors.
Why fashion?
It was not so much a decision as a passion.
What is your role as co-creative director of the label?
Roman Handt and I design the pieces together and I also work on shaping our corporate identity.
Your first collection, called “Town”, debuted at the Africa Fashion Week in Sandton. How would you describe it?
A classic collection of fashion standards – highly tailored but wearable everyday garments made with top-quality fabrics. We kept it in basic black and white with careful detailing. For us, it is important to debate every single stitch and its potential effect.
Why menswear?
When Roman and I met, we both felt quite strongly that an all-seasons menswear collection should be our first one. The next will definitely be for women.
Do you agree that the pieces have quite an architectural quality?
Yes. A garment is a product of construction: from your idea, to a design, to a pattern, to the transfer onto a fabric and, ultimately, to the shape of a body – that’s architecture.
