Rock chic

This year design duo Lyall Sprong and Marc Nicolson of ThingKing are the names behind the garment recycling bins created for Cape Town’s annual Rock Me Again upcycling initiative.

Supported by Jameson Irish Whiskey and Vida e Caffé, the initiative was launched by Capsule Projects in 2008 and encourages people to reduce waste by dropping old or unwanted clothes into bins that are stationed in select Vida stores. The garments are then refashioned into new pieces and given a fresh lease on life by some of South Africa’s top fashion designers.

According to Lyall Sprong, who along with ThingKing partner Marc Nicolson designed this year’s cardboard bins, “Rock Me Again is about taking something that isn’t needed or wanted and redefining it into an item that is sought after or valuable. It’s kind of like taking different sized fragments and weaving them into a structure or tapestry.” Of their design, Lyall says, “We wanted to do the same with the bin. Re-purpose used cardboard, using different sized parts, and create a unified, multi-faceted structure.”

With clothes bins stationed at the Vida stores in Kloof Street, Green Point, Wembley and Upper Eastside Hotel in Cape Town from 1–15 November 2011, it’s time for Capetonians to spring-clean their wardrobes and donate old garments to this nifty initiative.
