The FNB Johannesburg Art Fair opened in Sandton last night, with the country’s top galleries all gathering to show off their finest.
Of most interest to the VISI team, however, was the Southern Guild Exhibition by Trevyn and Julian McGowan of Source that once more brought together some of South Africa’s finest designers in unique pieces designed just for the show.
Southern Guild was established in 2008 to provide a platform for collectable, limited edition, South African design. By the end of this year, the McGowans say Southern Guild intends to have launched 150 new high-end designs into the market place.
This year, in partnership with ArcelorMittal, Southern Guild is showcasing work by some new names, including fashion designer Stoned Cherrie’s Nkhensani Nkosi, architect Pierre Swanepoel from StudioMas and artist Brett Murray. Nkosi has created a striking patterned bath, Swanepoel designed a contemporary interpretation of the brazier and Conrad Botes’ quirky shoe cupboard is a show stopper.
But it is certain to be John Vogel’s expanding corn circle table that will attract the most attention. Made out of jacaranda wood, its endless circles are hypnotic and the execution is faultless.
Award-winning table man Gregor Jenkins enters the cupboard market with an intriguing plywood cupboard that is part sculptural, part functional. Dahla Hulme intrigues with a table that looks certain to fall over but won’t – a great optical illusion.
Other designers include Andrea Kleinloog of Anatomy Design, Angus Taylor, Porky Hefer of Animal Farm, Bretty Murray, Bronze Age, Ceramic Matters, Dahla Hulme, David Manando, Dokter and Misses, Dylan Lewis, Egg, Enoch Ngwenya, Fly-Pitcher, Goet, Gregor Jenkin, Greymeta, Guy Du Toit, Haldane Martin, Heath Nash, House On Fire, Imiso, James Mudge, John Vogel, Koop, Laduma Ngxokolo, Life, Lyall Sprong, Marchard Van Tonder, Mud, Nic Bladen, Nico Masemolo, Nkhensani Nkosi, Nomili, OKHA, Ongaro, Paco, Pederson & Lennard, Phillippe Bousquet, Pierre Cronje, Silvio & Lesley, Studiomas, Tonic Design, UB Creative, Wayne Barker, Willowlamp, Xandre Kriel.
