In 2011, local designers have two opportunities to impress: in the annual PG Bison 1.618 student design competition and a new open competition in association with the Joburg Art Fair – both competitions supported this year by VISI Magazine.
PG Bison 1.618 Student Competition
The brief: Local clothing retailer Foschini has purchased an existing building in the Woodstock area, Cape Town, to serve as a new design studio and retail space for Nkhensani Nkosi’s Love Movement fashion range, which is stocked at Foschini stores nationwide.
You are tasked with the design of the new studio and retail space, according to the guidelines set out by Nkhensani in the complete brief. Bear in mind that Foschini would like an additional revenue generator within the building to assist in carrying operating costs.
You may determine the nature of this additional function with the guideline that the extra source of income must be branded “Enjoy Responsibly”.
Who can enter: Full-time students of interior design, architecture, interior architecture and industrial design.

Prizes
1st prize: A trip for the student and their lecturer to the 2012 Milan Furniture Fair, valued at R50,000 per person, and a R15,000 Foschini group voucher.
2nd prize: A trip to the 2012 Design Indaba in Cape Town, valued at R12,000 and a R8,000 Foschini group voucher.
3rd prize: A R7,000 cash prize and a R6,000 Foschini group voucher.
PG Bison 1.618 Open Competition
The brief: The PG Bison 1.618 Open Competition, presented in association with the Joburg Art Fair, challenges all designers to submit a design solution for two furniture pieces, namely a table and a book shelf.
The pieces should be designed according to the specifi cations laid out in the full brief (see www.1sixoneeight.co.za) and must make use of a durable PG Bison material (see www.pgbison.co.za).
Who can enter: The competition is open to all.

Prize
The winning designs will be produced and showcased at the 2011 Joburg Art Fair. the winner will also receive two tickets to attend the coveted opening night of the 2011 Joburg Art Fair, which runs from 23-25 September 2011.
