Hästens now in Cape Town

Swedish manufacturer of luxury handmade beds, Hästens, has just opened its latest international showroom in Greenpoint, Cape Town.

The family-owned company, which has been producing top-quality beds since the 1800s, was originally a saddlery. In those days, saddlers also made mattresses and the first Hästens mattress was made at around 1852, when the current owner’s great-great-grandfather laid the foundation for the family business.

Pehr Adolf was a craftsman of the old school (the words ‘quality’ and ‘craftsmanship’ were almost holy back then) and he passed on that attitude to future generations. Today, the company still embodies the quality and craftsmanship of its ancestry, with each bed constructed by hand.

Hästens beds are made from hard-wearing natural materials such as horsehair, flax, wool and cotton. These materials are also excellent for regulating body temperature. Added to this is the stability and quality of the Swedish-pine frames.
