Ágnes Herczeg’s Lace Sculptures

WORDS Mary Garner

Hungarian artist Ágnes Herczeg creates figural lace sculptures attached to wood or other natural objects that she finds.

Ágnes’s pieces, which often capture the female form during moments of deep thought or while busy with work, are made using natural materials. “In my work I use only natural materials of vegetable origin: yarns, threads, textiles, as well as tree branches, roots, fruits and seeds,” says Ágnes on her website. “I often make the moulded parts of my pictures from ceramic material.”

While studying textile conservation at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, she worked with several methods of embroidery and lace-making, including pillow lace, needle lace and macramé. “Lace-making is an extremely time consuming occupation; it takes several days just to complete a small piece,” she says.
