Design Indaba Emerging Creative: Mellaney Ruiters

WORDS Cheri Morris

Recently featured as an Emerging Creative at this year’s Design Indaba Festival, Mellaney Ruiters expresses her artistic talents through the creation of one-of-a-kind ceramic pieces.

Mellaney is a Fine Arts ceramics student and assistant lecturer at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University who creates handmade bespoke clay ceramics that feature complex patterns, organic lines and a bold use of colour, all finished in a glossy protective glaze. She launched her brand Mellaney Ruiters Ceramix at the end of last year and has been creating a colourful array of interesting and unique pieces ever since.

Mellaney has received numerous awards, including the New Signatures Award at The Epsac Community Art Centre NMMU Exhibition and the Best Student Award at the Regional Ceramic exhibition of Ceramic South Africa; she was also selected to participate as one of the 100 South African Artists for the Absa L’Atelier Art Selection Exhibition in Port Elizabeth.
