Under the direction of Tom Dixon, of Design Research Studio (DRS), ALTO rooftop bar and grill in Hong Kong has been transformed into the embodiment of the four elements: earth, wind, fire and water.
DRS’s first restaurant interior project in the Asian territory boasts striking pieces and a dramatic atmosphere that emulates the darker side of natural wonders. Inspired by its theatrical mountain views that are bordered by the sea below and sky above, the fixtures and molten metal brass fittings resemble fire and earth while a monochromatic backdrop serves to frame the expansive views.
Extensive use of raw textures, green marble and terrazzo stone embody the element of earth and its mountainous location. Smokey blackened table tops and benches made from timber exude the element of fire, complementing the 250 mini gold Tom Dixon Melt lights – the largest installation of its kind – that hang over the main restaurant space. They cast a distorted, dramatic light, akin to pictures taken of the cosmos by the Hubble Telescope, setting a glamorous and warm atmosphere for diners.
A cluster of gold pendants with a fading metal surface hang over booths to symbolise the heat that rises from the kitchen grill. The VIP room is lighter and brighter and focuses on air and oxidation. It features ethereal Curve pendants – another Tom Dixon design – and perforated wall lights with a soft silver finish to make for a bright and lively atmosphere.
