WORDS Michaela Stehr IMAGES Haruka Misawa
Japanese designer Haruka Misawa creates tiny paper flowers inspired by pencil shavings.
The flowers are made from paper rolled into cylindrical scrolls, which are then shaved using a regular pencil sharpener. Each flower is unique and the sharpenings vary in size depending on the thickness of the cylinder and the size of the sharpener.
“When I sharpened a pencil I discovered that the shavings presented an arrestingly beautiful form, and this kind of personal experience becomes the source of my ideas,” he explains.
Each flower is between 10 and 40 mm in size.
Haruka is the founder of the Misawa Design Institute in Tokyo.
