5 Things to Look Forward to at the RMB Turbine Art Fair 2018

The annual RMB Turbine Art Fair, located at Turbine Hall in Joburg’s Newtown, runs from 12 – 15 July 2018. Now in its sixth year, the RMB Turbine Art Fair features works from 380 artists from 48 exhibitors, with all pieces priced below R50 000.

Here are five not-to-be missed events happening at this year’s fair:

  • Life Force: The Still Lifes of Irma Stern Exhibition

Hosted by Strauss & Co, this exhibition will showcase a selection of still lifes by iconic South African artist, Irma Stern. The idea behind the exhibition is to show potential art collectors what can be achieved by making wise art investments.

  • This landscape. This landscape! The Quintessential Metaphor For Life by David Koloane, in collaboration with LL Editions

This exhibition celebrates the 80th birthday of renowned artist David Koloane. Curated by Ruzy Risik, the exhibition is for LL Editions’ Joe Legate, a time to “celebrate ntate Koloane as he was taught how to paint but expressed himself though the medium of printing.”

  • The Graduate Show: Home/Land

Curated by Musa N. Nxumalo, this exhibition showcases the work of some of South Africa’s most talented post-graduate painters and photographers. “We are interested in exploring how graduate artists regenerate the idea of home, land, space and identity,” says Musa on the Turbine Art Fair website.

  • The RMB Private Bank Talks Programme

A daily programme made up of free walkabouts with art professionals, artists and celebrities. The schedule includes panel discussions with artists such as David Koloane and Dr Haseenah Ebrahim, senior lecturer at Wits School of Arts and talks from art experts such as Wilhelm van Rensburg of Strauss & Co.   • RMB Talent Unlocked

This exhibition, curated by South African photographer Fulufhelo Mobadi, showcases the work of an exciting selection of up-and-coming artistic talent from across the country, namely Vanessa Tembane, Theko Boshomane, Sharon Moses, Selwyn Steyn, Ofentse Seshabela, Nathi Khumalo, Mncedi Madolo, Mignon Modema Mayhew, Marguerite Visser Sanders, Lusanda Ndita, Loreal Vos, Lebogang Mabusela, Keneilwe Mokoena, Jessica Le Roux, Henrietta Elizabeth Scholtz, Andre du Toit & Tamara Langwe, Xoliswa Ngwenya and Zandri Oosthuysen.

The fair is located at Turbine Hall, 65 Ntemi Piliso Street, Newtown, Joburg. Tickets cost R100 online or R120 at the door for adults. Tickets for children under 12 cost R50 online or R80 at the door and students pay R80 online and R100 at the door. For more information, visit turbineartfair.co.za.
