World Design Capital judges in town

Did you notice Table Mountain aglow in yellow light last night? What about the city trees wrapped in yellow? No, the Simpsons have not moved to Cape Town – this is much bigger news than that.

The World Design Capital judges flew into the Mother City for a whirlwind tour that will hopefully solidify their decision to make Cape Town the first African city to hold the World Design Capital title for 2014.

As part of the final selection process, the judges are being whizzed around on sightseeing excursions to view some of the places and structures that make Cape Town the designer city that it is. With parts of the city decked out in celebratory yellow, we’re all holding thumbs that the judges are as impressed with the Mother City’s efforts as we are.

Says host and Cape Town Partnership MD Bulelwa Makalima-Ngewana, “We hope to inspire the judges with our innovation, passion and humanity. Cape Town has an important story to be told; the tale of a city that is using design to overcome our historic problems of disconnection, inequality and urban sprawl to create a more inclusive and liveable city for all citizens. Our bid theme is ‘Live Design. Transform Life’ and we will be demonstrating to the judges how Africa is leading the way when it comes to socially responsive design.”

Besides the yellow-hued mountain and 100 yellow-clad trees, a fleet of low-carbon-emissions Green Cabs have been painted yellow and will ferry the judges around town. So if you spot them, make sure to flash your designer smile their way.
