The Wavescape Art Board Project is in its 16th year, with 11 artists transforming surfboards into works of art.
This year, artists Lionel Smit, Brett Murray, Arno Carstens, Karabo Poppy, Michael Chandler, Heath Nash, Grace Cross, Kate Arthur, Lucie de Moyencourt and Jake Aikman have collaborated with The Wavescape Surf & Ocean Festival to each create a one-off surfboard to be auctioned to the public. Artist Blessing Ngobeni has also collaborated with world surfing champion Shaun Tomson on a unique board.
The Wavescape Art Board project has been raising fund and awareness for ocean charities since 2005, with the main beneficiaries of the project being the NSRI, Shark Spotters, 9Miles Project, Adaptive Surfing South Africa, Ocean Pledge, the Sabrina Foundation and the Beach Co-op. The auction will be held at Jack Black’s Tap Room in Diep River, Cape Town on Wednesday 27 November. Doors open at 7pm and the auction starts at 7:30pm.
