Artist Wim Legrand spoke to First Thursdays about his new collection Test Campaign, which was exhibited at the 99 Loop Gallery in Cape Town.

Wim, who is originally from Belgium, runs the Black River Studio printing shop, an occupation that suffuses his paintings.

“As a painter I am informed by what I do as a printer, and it’s that in-between space where you’re waiting for something to take shape that also informs you, that gives you time to consider and reconsider things,”shares Wim. “It’s all about a certain rhythm that’s very important in print making. But because I’m trying as a print maker to take that into my painting practice, [it’s] not only physical layering, but layering in time and concept. That’s what it’s all about. A lot of my ideas happen while I draw. I’m doing a lot of sketching and drawing in between to generate these ideas and start stacking them up and have a sort of database not only in your sketchbook, but also in the back of your mind.”

Listen to him talk about this process and share how his environment largely affected his colour palette and the themes of his paintings.
