Unbelievable Green Point before-and-after

WORDS Debbie Loots

This striking Green Point renovation by Dawid Augustyn and his Establishment team can only be fully appreciated when you see the before and after pics.

What does one do when faced with a dull Green Point house, one that struggles to keep up its faded front facade next to those of its nifty neighbours? Ask Dawid Augustyn, managing director of Establishment who offers clients tailor-made solutions to renovation and refurbishing projects. He’s redone this house inside and outside, from the architecture down to the furniture and fittings, and within budget.

The original house was a shy single storey peeping over a dreary fence with two en suite bedrooms and a little loft space calling for a whole lotta love, but what the space lacked in imagination and charm, it made up for in potential and fabulous views across the ocean. And, who doesn’t want to live close to the Mother City’s buzz?

So, the Establishment team moved in and turned the gloomy little house right around into a gorgeous home with two bedrooms, three-and-a-half bathrooms, a spacious lounge, dining room and studio. Dawid is especially proud that they managed to fulfill another one of the owners’ briefs by letting as much of the outdoors in as possible with all the living spaces opening up to the outside.

The team raised the roof (literally) as the owners wanted more space, and stayed true to their company’s green ideals (and mindful of the budget) by reusing 90% of the floorboards as well as existing cupboard joinery where possible. They replaced old French doors with aluminium sliders, while a new staircase with an integrated sofa was custom-fitted.

Talking of upstairs… wonder what happened to that little loft? Well, it became the pretty big main bedroom with large windows to let the light in, its own study and dressing room. Wait, there’s more: it boasts the most amazing all around ocean vistas through a clear glass shower.

Outside was turned beautiful too – a brand new pool with a wooden deck made all the difference, even the patio got the Establishment pokey-to-pretty once -over, with vertical wooden frames against the wall giving a great variety of succulents a place to call home. The front garden wasn’t to be just another common green variety either – the owners wanted it functional, and that’s what they got. Today they pick the fruits of the Establishment team’s labours in the form of a thriving vegetable patch.

Says Dawid: “The house is full of surprises, every space has something special. I love that we managed to create a complete indoor-outdoor lifestyle experience and that all rooms open up to the outside.”

Well, certainly no more shy peeping over the fence for this Green Point house – finished off with a spanking new roof, a wall and timber combo wall – it’s all spruced up and ready to rub shoulders with the rich and famous!
