Calling them “it girls” would mean The Wknd Social founders only have a moment in the spotlight. But “The Other Girls”, as the collective is known, have instead carved out a niche, which brings together the ongoing pop-up restaurant trend with urban adventuring and revitalising public spaces, to ensure their longevity.
Inspired by the Everyday People Brunch in New York, The Wknd Social stages brunches that end up in parties in unusual venues, like the Women’s Jail at Constitution Hill and the Museum of African Design in Maboneng, on a monthly basis. “We try our best to take people to new and unique spaces within the inner city because we love Joburg,” The Other Girls say.
The Other Girls is made up of fashion and lifestyle blogger Thithi Nteta, writer and producer Nandi Dlepu, food blogger Nothando Moleketi, ad account manager Tumi Mohale and trends consultant Vuyiswa Mutshekwane.
Although these five women are well connected, they still have their feet firmly on the ground. The success, they say, is owed to a combination of good food, good music and good people. Primarily though, it’s the people who make the vibe of their events. The Wknd Socials are ticketed events open to the public, so instead of staying indoors, The Other Girls suggest you get social.
The next Wknd Social will be on 29 November 2014.
