WORDS Mary Garner
The Weylandts Herbarium collection, which features a range of scatter cushions and complementary hand-made Polish glass vases, draws inspiration from details found in the natural world.
The Herbarium scatter cushions are based on fern prints created by pioneering English botanist Thomas C Balgrave, who in 1860, recorded his findings on South African ferns in a comprehensive and exquisitely illustrated book.
These illustrations have now been translated into contemporary designs, while the grain of the original photographic paper adds a sense of historical allure to the pigment-printed linen.
The complementary glass collection is hand-made in Poland using the “hand-mouth blown” method, a process that involves the glass being placed in a kiln to be melted at high temperatures before it’s moulded by artisans into a new shape.
The following pieces are now available online and at Weylandts’ stores nationwide: Multiple Fern Leaf Scatter R1 195; Fern Leaf Scatter R1 195; Charcoal Fern Scatter R1 095; Mensa Clear Vase, from R225; Volcano Clear Vase, from R225; Yoyo Clear Vase, from R245.
