Created by South Sudanese refugee women in the Bidibidi settlement in Uganda, The Milaya Project‘s unique, hand-embroidered pillows are now available at Merchants on Long, situated in the heart of Cape Town’s CBD.

Blending tradition with contemporary design, each Milaya Project throw pillow tells a story of craftsmanship and cultural pride. Traditional South Sudanese “milaya” embroidery is reimagined into striking contemporary decor, with intricate motifs that pay homage to the region’s rich cultural lexicon.

According to co-founder Nina Strolich, all the designs are created by the women involved in the project. “We take the designs they have traditionally used and adapt them for new products, or ask them to come up with a new design along a particular theme or animal,” she explains.

These motifs can include geometric patterns, stylised animals, and floral elements. The pillows feature a vibrant colour palette, adding personality to any space.

Each pillow is a one-of-a-kind piece of art that is versatile enough to complement a variety of interior design styles, from modern and minimalist to bohemian and eclectic.

By purchasing these throw pillows, customers directly contribute to the economic empowerment and well-being of the artisans and their communities, making a tangible difference in their lives. Merchants On Long’s dedication to supporting African artisans and promoting sustainable practices perfectly aligns with The Milaya Project’s mission.
