The Lake

WORDS Malibongwe Tyilo

If you hang out at the right coffee shops, boutiques and galleries in Cape Town, Jozi or Durban, you might have spotted a copy of The Lake magazine. Launched in 2014, it comes out every two months and it’s free. It has a print run of 2 000 units, which are usually picked up within a couple of days. We asked editor Stefan Naude for the scoop on the magazine all the cool kids are talking about.

What is the motivation behind The Lake?

A lot of publications at the moment feed the same content year after year. The media is flooded with the same people and we are forced to read about whom they are dating and what they had for breakfast. I’m trying to present to readers people they can realistically relate to or aspire to emulate.

We love your covers. How do you choose your cover stars?

Anybody can be on the cover of our magazine. We are interested in archiving certain individuals and the predictions they will hopefully represent towards the future of this country.

Who is your average reader?

We did not really have an age group in mind when we started, rather more of a mind set. I suppose they would be open-minded people in their mid-20s to late-40s.

Do you work on other projects?

At The Lake Publishing we do layout for books, magazines and art publications. We recently did a zine for Converse Europe, and I’m busy finishing off a 200-page art book for a SMAC Gallery artist.
