The Durban team have landed

VISI joined Durban design studio EGG to celebrate the opening of their Johannesburg showroom. The address? 03 Desmond in the city’s blossoming décor hub of Kramerville, of course. We seriously recommend a visit.

Johannesburg’s design community came out in style on Wednesday night to welcome one of Durban’s favourite design studios to their new shop and showroom in Kramerville near Sandton.

Egg Design has long been one of Durban’s leading design studios, with their work a favourite not only with local decorators and home owners, but also on the international design stage.

And now they’re set to take Johannesburg. Egg’s arrival in Kramerville cements the position of that district as Johannesburg’s new design hub. Their position on the ground floor corner of the popular new 03 Desmond development means Egg is one of the first things you’ll see as you drive into Kramerville.

Long the haunt of fabric-seeking interior decorators, Kramerville is now host to so many important designers and furniture outlets (and even more fabric outlets than ever before!) that it is an essential destination for anyone in the décor and design trade, plus individuals planning building or decorating on any scale.

Egg founders and owners, Greg and Roche Dry, said they had been hoping to make a Johannesburg move for some time but only took the leap when they found the right premises. The vast space they occupy has enabled them to show off a wide selection of their designs: From the wire rocking chairs and coloured lockers that many associate with Egg, to the classic and sophisticated wardrobes and dining room tables that they have sent all over the world.

It’s an eclectic mix of designs, showing that it’s impossible to pigeon hole the Egg design signature – and that’s how they like it.

Greg and Roche say they are not inspired by design trends nor by the need to design furniture. Instead they are inspired by materiality and then seek ways of expressing that inspiration. The most recent favourite has been working with metals like brass and copper. Central to this period is the Egg range of copper rose cupboards and chests. Inspired by doors they saw in Mauritius but also the 3D quirkiness of vintage swimming caps, these pieces have sold tremendously well in Hong Kong and they’re hoping the Joburg market likes them as much.

The next material on the Egg radar are sparkling semi-precious stones and there’s already a spectacular brass and jewel chandelier adorning the showroom.

Another highlight of the Egg showroom in Kramerville is the room dedicated entirely to flat packed children’s furniture. From killer cots to lights, see-saws and animal money boxes – this is yummy mummy heaven and the affordable, easy-to-transport furniture solutions for little people are already walking out the door.

But Egg are not only furniture designers; they are also interior designers, and will be servicing their Johannesburg clients out of the Kramerville showroom too.
