In a fast-evolving world where the lines between work and lifestyle continue to blur, Workshop17 reimagines what it means to “go to work”. Founded by Mark Seftel and Paul Keursten, Workshop17 is a visionary co-working platform that aims to redefine the basic 9–5.

We took a tour of their Cape Town locations to learn more about the design ethos behind Workshop17.

The philosophy

What stands out is the intention behind every space – not just in form and function, but in spirit. At the heart of Workshop17 lies a powerful truth: that when people from different cultures, careers, and backgrounds share a space, magic happens. Ideas are exchanged, perspectives broadened, and something beautiful takes root: community.

It’s a modern embodiment of Ubuntu – “I am because we are.” These shared workspaces invite you to bring your full self into the room – your work, heritage, and creativity – and contribute to a greater, collective energy.

Design meets purpose

Every Workshop17 location tells a unique story, shaped not only by its function but also by its atmosphere and environment. Nisha van der Hoven, Head of Design for Workshop17 and one half of the design duo behind Hoven, says: “Each space is a product of its community, which becomes a flagship of that location. The ability to learn and experiment with each workspace is part of the joy of creating the spaces. Understanding what’s relevant to the site – be it its history, colour palette, references to nature or sport – becomes the catalyst for how the design takes shape.”

Nestled in one of Cape Town’s liveliest districts, the design of the Kloof Street workspace is vibrant, featuring a boardroom with breathtaking views of Table Mountain, tranquil breakout areas for focused work, and a top-notch coffee and snack bar to keep you fuelled throughout the day.

In contrast, the Newlands location is calming, thanks to its green surroundings. Overlooking the historic Newlands sports grounds, this space blends the idea that “work is play” seamlessly.

Then there’s the iconic V&A Waterfront workspace. With the harbour as its backdrop, the space inspires creativity and success. The design channels a sense of movement and possibility with an open layout featuring plenty of working desks, lounge areas, and coffee stations.

What truly brings each location to life, however, is the art. The walls are adorned with pieces that honour the people, nature, and spirit of each neighbourhood. It roots the workspaces in place and meaning, creating an atmosphere where creativity can flourish.

It’s a vision of what South Africa can be when we come together to share, collaborate, and grow. | workshop17.co.za
