The art of drinking tea in antique elegance has been brought to the world of textiles by Mingo Lamberti and Pearly Yon.
The brand-new Tea Cup Collection, a range of scatter cushions inspired by period-piece tea cups, recreate traditional tea-set designs in a contemporary way.
Mingo Lamberti, better known for his designer T-shirts, collaborated with Pearly Yon on this collection of cushions – their first self-initiated project that attracted much attention at the recent Design Indaba Expo in Cape Town.
The idea for the cushions arose from a visit to an antique china store in Kalk Bay called “Whatnot & China Town”. Inspired by the delicate designs, the designers noticed how each teacup design is made to specifically fit the shape of the vessel.
“We adapted this thought when we decided to make our designs fit the cushion panel instead of doing a step-and-repeat textile design, which so many cushions do,” the duo says.
Drawing inspiration from different eras and styles of teacup design, The Tea Cup Collection includes a local take on Spode designs, a transformation of flower patterns, stylised landscapes based on Swedish designs and retro tea cups with added detail.
Each scatter cushion includes hand stitching to give it an authentic feel and another layer of design, while only 100 of each design have been printed.
Single scatter cushions sell for R450, while the covers retail at R400 each.
