Sussex Open Studios

WORDS Malibongwe Tyilo

Thanks to the new Open Studios, Woodstock’s Sussex Road is finally having its moment in the spotlight, revealing itself as the suburb’s latest hidden gem.

Just one block away from the popular Woodstock Exchange and Side Street Studios, we suspected it wouldn’t be long before Sussex Road was touched by the urban rejuvenation happening right next door.

This new project by King Juliet Productions, Dawie Swart Developments and Nest Living, sees an industrial space transformed into 19 spacious open-plan living units, which as of last week, are now being used as an interactive space to host pop-up events and exhibitions. The programme runs until November 7th 2014 and will be open on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. This includes Salud, an exciting new pop-up Mexican restaurant, too.

You can expect to see the works of some firm VISI favourites, like Lucie De Moyencourt, Jana + Koos, Pedersen + Lennard and Michael Chandler. Throughout the programme, potential buyers will be able to pop in and view units on the open days. If the Sussex Open Studios Facebook page is anything to go by, the units are selling like hot cakes. If you see yourself joining Woodstock’s urban renewal, now would be the time to pop into the studios to view a space, or to simply enjoy Salud and the surrounding exhibitions.
