WORDS: Remy Raitt
The innovative CHURCH Gift Shop on Spin Street, Cape Town, has just added two of South Africa’s hottest fashion labels to their rails.
The versatile garments by Johannesburg’s Superella are once again available in Cape Town (Mungo & Jemima previously stocked the range), while the unorthodox Richard De Jager’s newest garments for his Phwoa collection add an extra element of excitement to the hip novelty store.
Superella’s creations for women hang in a colour-coded row of blacks and greys. The structured garments are beautifully produced, with a fresh, stylish appeal. VISI loves the fact that each label tells the story of Superella – designer Ella Buter’s confident alter ego.
Richard’s newest garments stand in complete juxtaposition to Ella’s practical, no-nonsense approach. According to Richard, his new range has a low-fi aesthetic that’s relevant in Africa. Additions to his knitwear pieces include the bright-orange “Phwoa Parasite Necklace”, a versatile item made of luminous strands of fabric that is, according to Richard, “economical at this time, and fun to wear”.
His “Phwoa, I f***ing love u!!!” hat is a “key piece in the collection and, at R75, you can’t beat it,” says the designer. “It’s more accessible to people in our country, because fashion has just got too expensive. I mean, f*** man, I went to Louis Vuitton the other day and it costs R300 for a key ring. That doesn’t make sense in a country like this.”
Nestled in between novelty books, one-of-a-kind toys, bow ties, fragrant soaps and a variety of other quirky gifts, both these collections have found a great new home in the Mother City.
