Spring fling

The new SPRING FLING edition of VISI magazine hit the shelves on Wednesday 26 September. Here is word from our incomparable content director, Sumien Brink.

Inspired by the season, this issue is about reinventing. All the homes we are showing have been reinvented to a greater or lesser degree. I’m a firm believer in the fact that more than anything else made by human hands, buildings – if they are allowed – improve with time.

In his iconic book How Buildings Learn, Stewart Brand shows us how to work with time rather than against it and how to develop “the art of the long view”. I’m so often pleasantly surprised when I revisit buildings that we have featured in VISI years before. Ten to one they look better, feel better and live better, which is just the way we like it.

We have definitely taken the long view in both our decor stories. In ‘New Heritage’  Tracy Lynch reinvents the crisp blue and white of classic Delft porcelain to create a very modern scheme. In ‘Boards of Blue’ Gavin Rooke collaborates with master surfboard shaper Spider Murphy to create a series of Delft-inspired surfboards, hand-shaped by Spider and embellished by South African artists and designers.

We also give you a glimpse of how art historian and designer Michael Chandler and lots of volunteers gave township homes in Delft South a Delft makeover with a generous sponsorship from Plascon paints.

And the final thought on reinventing your space from our deputy editor Annemarie Meintjes: invest in art. “Consumerism may be dead globally, but art is alive and well and living in South Africa. Everyone you meet is either an artist, an art buyer or owns an art gallery. It’s all about art, art, art!”
