Smart Idea: Stamps Repurposed

Use an old stamp collection and let your imagination run wild.

Modern life may be all about fast-paced change, but that doesn’t mean we have to lose our love of all things nostalgic – such as beautifully designed stamps used in quirky new ways.

We breathed new life into a 1970s coffee table by photographing an original stamp against a dark background using a professional camera. Then we had it printed on good-quality paper and topped it with a sheet of thick glass to protect it (A3 was the perfect size for our table).

The colour print cost R102 and the 10 mm glass set us back R220 from a local glass and mirror supplier.

You could use a cellphone with a high pixel count camera, such as a Nokia Lumia 1020 (41-megapixel sensor), to take the photo. Then make an A3 colour photocopy for R10. If you’re going to use it to top a table, don’t go too thin on the glass.
