A two-storey 400sqm triangular pavilion has been specially constructed at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town for the Volvo Ocean Race stopovers.

The SCA Pavilion was designed in conjunction with German live communication company Uniplan. The main aim of the project was to incorporate sustainability and ethical business practices through design, and to support the SCA team, the first all-female team to enter the Volvo Ocean Race since 2001.

An original 12m high mainsail stands against the building’s exterior, surrounded by 220sqm of clear glaze, creating a 180 degree view of the harbour.

Inside the pavilion, an exact, to scale LEGO replica of the SCA boat has been constructed, complete with moveable parts. Interactive media stations have also been installed for the public to learn more about the individual sailors and their progress.

The SCA has used 300sqm of wood to construct the pavilion.

The teams will be travelling around the world and the SCA Pavilion will act as the main base for all stopover events. The boats each hold 11 sailors and an onboard reporter to document their voyage around the world.
