WORDS Mary Garner
Swedish designers Sofia Lagerkvist and Anna Lindgren of Front have designed hand-made, parquet-inspired kilim rugs, which can be adapted to create geometric poufs.
The range, entitled Parquet, includes three modular pieces, namely Tetragon, Rhomb and Hexagon, whose geometrical patterns give the creations a sense of depth.
Tetragon features varying shapes and colours put together with octagons and squares, while Rhomb makes use of grey and orange in diamond and square shapes. As a pouf, the Tetragon and Rhomb designs both have six sides. Hexagon’s simple pattern is made up of striped diamonds coming together in a honeycomb formation. The pouf version of this design has 20 sides.
Released by rug brand Gan at IMM Cologne in January 2018, each of the shapes within the patterns fit together like a puzzle – thanks to the fact that the designers turned the 2D patterns into nets for 3D shapes.
“We wanted to create a colourful rug with geometric patterns,” says Front on its website. “We were inspired by old floors in palaces and churches that were often decorated. The old craft of parquet flooring was translated by skilled weavers in the traditional kilim technique.”
