Reindeer rules at Tendence

WORDS: Annemarie Meintjes

At Tendence 2011, the pre-Christmas consumer trade fair recently held in Germany, the reindeer was king.

Father Christmas’ favourite helper appeared everywhere – on porcelain trophies for walls, in table ornaments, and printed on paper serviettes, gift bags, silk curtains and woolen blankets. Realistic replicas were trapped under glass domes, a life-size trophy reined over a glamorous tableware stand, and stag-antler chandeliers like those available at Hadeda were best sellers.

So, if you’re starting to plan your Christmas decor (yes, it’s that time of the year already!), expect reindeer-themed items in stores soon.

My favourite was “Rudolf” from Koziol, a quirky reindeer that hooks on to the rim of a cup or glass to ensure that it doesn’t end up in the wrong hands when the party gets wild. I also loved “Ender” – a powder-coated, wall-mounted wardrobe from Pulpo – and his big sister, “Oh Deer XL” – the ultimate garderobe for guests’ coats in the entrance hall.
