What three words encapsulate South African design for you?

Unexpected, quirky, relevant.

What effect do you think the title 2014 World Design Capital will have on Cape Town and South Africa as a whole?

It will make us finally believe that we can lead not just follow – and hopefully our chests will puff out a bit more proudly (stomach in – chest out, sort of thing).

Who is your style icon?

The late, great Diana Vreeland.

If you could have invented anything, what would it be?

The see-saw that generates electricity for a classroom while the kids play on it.

What is your favourite building in South Africa?

(At the moment – it changes often) – Circa gallery in Jozi.

What is the one must-see spot in South Africa you recommend to tourists?

The desolate beauty of the Karoo.

If you could live anywhere in the world for a year, where would it be?

Shanghai.

What do you love most in your life?

My partner and our 3 cats.

What is your greatest extravagance?

A two-day weekend.

Where would you like to retire?

I don’t understand the word “retire”.
