Prototype pop-up shop

Like to be the first one to catch a glimpse of hot local furniture pieces? Then you better make your way to the Prototype pop-up design concept store, fast!

Located in the heart of Cape Town, the store offers visitors a unique opportunity to see how the work of talented local furniture designers is constantly evolving. But the audiences aren’t the only ones who benefit. The store also offers an opportunity for the designers to receive feedback on their “prototypes” from a varied audience.

Conceptualised and realized by five established designers, the store “is a democratic design space that endeavors to stimulate and encourage debate and interest in the art of furniture design”.

The designers who will exhibit include David Krynauw, Antonie Grobler from Individua, Mark from Luna, Jared Odell Furniture & Design and Anthony Martin with his Drift furniture.

The pop-up store acts as a test space for the designers’ new items, which are also available for purchase. Items that are well-received by the public will go into production. From handcrafted wooden furniture items to innovative lighting solutions, the store offers unique pieces that aren’t available commercially.

Prototype places emphasis on ethical and sustainable design, strongly promoting green design with a focus on quality, originality and craftsmanship. Each of the pieces on display is made by hand locally, with many of the pieces using locally sourced materials.

The store will stay open until 3 December 2011 and can be found at 9 Orphan Street, Cape Town.
