WORDS Debbie Loots
Nature has moved indoors in more ways than one, and it’s for keeps, it seems. With LikLik’s Home Aquaponics System, goldfish keep company with coriander, while MossCo’s marvellous moss has occupied interior walls. Yes, it’s all good and green and very delightful.
If you fancy the idea of growing herbs in planter pods, which extend into a fish tank and naturally filter the water, an Aquaponics System is just the thing. Available in two versions – a three-planter table-top and a bigger nine-planter screen – simply place it in a sunny spot, near the kitchen, so fresh herbs and greens are close at hand. Just remember to feed the fish!
Between you, me and these four walls, reindeer moss will grow on you (and your walls). Imported from Scandinavia, it goes on screens, pillars and walls; it can even wrap around a tired old sculpture, for instance, to give it a fresh new look.
Once it has been harvested off the forest floor, it’s either left natural or organically pigmented and semi-preserved to prevent further growth. Applied on special tiles and then onto the surface of your choice, the moss should be kept out of direct sunlight in order to breathe and stay spongy for years. More good news: applied on walls, it absorbs nearly 90% of sound. Time to bring nature inside.
