Lighting is to a space what jewellery is to a wardrobe.

Like a sparkling set of dangling earrings that transforms a sensible little black number into a glamorous creation, a pendant light can transform any space into an enchanting venue.

Here is a selection of spectacular pendant lights, chosen by Siviwe James, Sales Consultant at Créma Design, and Tristan du Plessis, Studio A’s Designer of Signature Projects.

Louis Weisdorf for GUBI first drew this design in 1972, the golden era of Danish design. By individually rotating the two opposing outside shades, the brass Multi-Lite pendant lamp can be transformed into multiple combinations where the light can be directed into different directions. Designed for DCW Editions by Dominique Perrault and Gaëlle Lauriot-Prévost, In The Tube is made of borosilicate glass and closed with aluminium stoppers sealed in silicone. The mountings are stainless steal so it can be used both inside and outside, and it can be suspended from the ceiling or fitted to a wall – in either a horizontal or vertical position. This light by Studio Vit for &Tradition is made of white marble from Carrara, Italy, and mouth-blown borosilicate glass in a playful riff on the archetypal light bulb form. R4 311, cremadesign.co.za

Designed by British designer Lee Broom, the Tube light is milled from a single piece of Carrara marble, finished at the ends with bands of brushed brass. Containing a strip of LED bulbs, it looks like a solid length of glowing marble. R71 800, cremadesign.co.za

This polycarbonate light by Tom Dixon has a chrome finish that fades from reflective to transparent. It is also available in copper and gold. As Tristan says, “The silhouette and proportions of any Tom Dixon fitting are always beautiful.” R11 348 each, cremadesign.co.za

The Dies e Nox collection, designed by Laura Alesi and Silvia Braconi for Karman, are suited for indoors and outdoors. It comes in two colours: Dies is clear and symbolises the early-morning light, and Nox is amber and mimics the light of the evening.

Coarse natural fibres are combined with smooth transparent blown glass globes in different shapes and sizes in this sublime collection from Brokis. The LED light source is housed in the metal top hood. From R33 217 to R48 607 depending on size, cremadesign.co.za.
