South African artist Paul du Toit in collaboration with Italian eyewear brand Persol held a one-night only exhibition last night that celebrated contemporary aesthetics and attention to detail.
Historically linked to the design and art worlds with a long tradition of Italian design and craftsmanship, Persol is known for creatively communicating the brand via contemporary art. Paul du Toit, an icon of the local art industry and avid fan of the brand, selected Persol to be his partner for this pop-up installation.
The installation showcased the synergy between art, fashion and design and according to Du Toit, “Represents the transient yet ever present parallel between these elements.”
“My whole world is about the visual and ways of seeing,” says Paul. “Glasses are part of our lives and in particular sunglasses. Nowhere do they know this more than in Italy and the timeless design reflects in the Persol brand. It’s a natural fit to be collaborating with them through art and I think this project allows for interesting dimensions to extend the visual experience that art brings. This project, with all the amazing energies involved, creates new ways of seeing.”
The installation, which required hours of intricate work, brought life to the key term ‘Perception’, an idea that has inspired some of Paul’s most recent paintings. Designed to be celebrated for one night only, the artwork has already been dismantled, leaving behind only the perceptions viewers had of it.
Persol sunglasses are available form Sunglass Hut.
