SPACE10, a research and design lab established by IKEA, has released an open-source Bee Home design, in collaboration with studio Bakken & Bæck and interior and product designer Tanita Klein.
To counteract the damage done to bees’ natural habitats across the globe, the group has created an open-source structure designed to house solitary bees in your garden or on your balcony, rooftop or windowsill.
“Solitary bees are friendly,” explains SPACE10 on its website. “They don’t produce honey and therefore have nothing to protect. They only sting if trod on and are safe to keep around kids and pets.”
All you need to do is go to beehome.design and choose your size and design preference, download the files for free and receive instructions on how to go about assembling your very own bee home. You can also share the files with a maker who can construct the bee home for you. Find out everything you need to know about how it works here.
The project not only encourages creativity but also shows how digital collaboration and skill sharing works across the globe to create environmentally-conscious products.
