One leg up

We love this quirky, local design eye-candy by Nicole Long from The Striped Flamingo in Durban.

Isn’t it just amazing when your day job also happens to be the one thing you simply love to do in your free time? Well, this is certainly the case for Durban’s Nicole Long, who juggles a graphic-design day job with her after-hours illustrating business, The Striped Flamingo. Her pretty pastel illustrations have captured our hearts.

Tell us about The Striped Flamingo?
Nicole & The Striped Flamingo is a freelance business, where I design wallpapers and do textile and graphic design and illustration. I use my blog and online media to display my portfolio and canvas new business.

Do you remember your first drawing?
Not the first drawing, but I do remember a storybook I illustrated in Grade One.

Tell us about the children’s cookbook you wrote.
Little Chef is a fun book featuring classic sweet and savoury recipes. The layout is quirky, as are the hand-drawn fonts, layout and artwork.

What inspires you?
I’m inspired by everything around me, English terminology and sayings, pastel colours and illustrations.

What is it with Durban and designers?
The competition and talent is huge because, in my opinion, Durbanites try harder to make a name for themselves.
