Megan Fasanelli of Meg Vaun Interiors was tasked with turning a bland office into something that reminded her client of New York – and pulled it off brilliantly.
The Johannesburg office, previously made up of “white, white and more white”, has been transformed from a neutral cube into a young, edgy and contemporary space, all without any major furniture or fitting changes. Megan says the big changes came with the introduction of colour, wallpapers, reupholstery and lighting.
“As far as the accessories go, I wanted to add a quirky spin and sense of humour. We chose items to make you smile — things like a solar-powered Queen mum who waves, a giant, gold piggy bank and plastic toy animals painted glossy white.”
The space is used by a creative team who designs and imports fashion accessories for major retailers. The staff often work long hours, so Megan wanted to create a working environment that exuded fun.
Any tips for redoing an office?
I don’t think it always needs to be a complete revamp. Careful space planning, re-arranging pieces and styling a space beautifully can make the world of difference. Lighting is also very important. There is nothing worse than dreadful flourescent lights to work under, day in and day out.
Employees spend so much time at the office. There is a strong global trend towards making working environments as appealing as possible. I feel that if business owners spend the time and energy in creating a beautiful space, employees in turn will feel appreciated and valued and probably be more productive.
Do you believe in clashing colours?
I feel that clashing colours can be fabulous. In the past, it was always said that you should never combine pink and red. However, those colours are now often used side by side. I don’t believe in any hard and fast rules as far as colours go – I will always put together what feels good.
Colour blocking is a huge trend right now. Did you make use of it at all?
I have and do, but still love including pattern and beautiful fabrics.
