The Tom Dixon collection is expanding with cutting-edge lighting and furniture designs, set to be launched at Milan Design Week 2011 in an unconventional way.
Dubbed “Multiplex”, the Milan exhibition space will take the format of a pop-up viewing theatre, broadcasting centre, restaurant, shop and gallery, where design lovers can explore the multifaceted world of Tom Dixon. A clear departure from the traditional exhibition booths typical of the Milan Design Week, the aim is to create up to six working environments.
Visitors will experience a trail of sensations created through hyper-real environments. Each section explores ideas of luminosity and technology through a science lab, a hotel lobby and a viewing theatre. A broadcasting centre updates information daily from all over the fair onto a giant wall of microtiles.
The new products that will be exhibited are all of the calibre the design world has come to expect from Dixon. New products and more recent versions of some of the classics will be making their debut:
Etch
Etch is a series of digitally manufactured shades, a candle holder and tower. Made by employing a high-tech process used to produce electronic products, including circuit boards, the method allows for intricate patterns to be cut directly onto the metal.
The trio of new Etch Lights measure 45 cm, 65cm and up to an impressive 100cm diameter for the largest size. In addition LED strips illuminate the 187.5cm standing Etch Tower. From R2,800.
Bulb
The Bulb is available in three types of chandelier – wide, long and round— with multiple bulbs and as an individual pendant. Made from mould-blown glass, the quick start T5 bulb is an efficient oversized light bulb designed in reaction to the phasing-out of the incandescent bulb and the unattractive aesthetic of most CFL replacements. From R1,100.
Beat Shades
The Beat Shades are a series of lights inspired by the sculptural simplicity of brass cooking pots and traditional water vessels. They’re spun and hand-beaten by renowned skilled craftsmen of Moradabad in Northern India. The hand-beaten brass Beat Light is now available in a white gloss lacquered exterior, with white braided pendant cord and ceiling rose. From R3,500.
Fan Chair
The Fan Chair is made from steam-bent Ash with an indigo stain and a black leather seat pad. The elegant chair measures 112cm in height. From R18,100.
Scoop Chair
The Scoop Chair is all about comfort. It’s generously proportioned with a seat that, as its name suggests, has a scooped shape, designed to hold the sitter in an enclosed space. Scoop Chair range is now available in Copper plated and Solid Oak legs. From R12,400.
Cast Chair
The Cast Chair is made from sand-cast iron with a black powder-coated finish. The legs are bolted to the seat and back components, made from slabs of thick foam. A simple construction shipped in a small package, all parts of the chair fit into the seat itself. From R5,500.
Peg chair
The Peg Chair is a café chair inspired by the quietly pared down character of Japanese architecture. The chair is constructed from solid birch, making it lightweight yet robust. Easy to stack, its functional shape pays homage to Rietveld. The Peg Chair is now available in a blanched birch finish in addition to the white, black and fluoro finishes. From R3,100.
Roll Table
The Roll Table is an adaptable and functional café or bistro table. Made with a sand-cast iron base, a metal stem and either a laminate top with extruded rubber bumper or blanched birch top. The rolling wheel on the cast-iron base enables lone waiting staff to reconfigure tables with minimal fuss and assistance. Custom sizes and finishes are available upon request. From R7,500.
