Nando’s Creative Exchange: Q&A with Tharien Smith

How did you get involved in art?

From an early age. I found a deep passion for Biology, Science, and Geography in elementary school. What captivated me the most were the assignments requiring illustrations or diagrams. I would spend hours drawing these illustrations. I got many gold stars!

How would you describe your work?

My work is usually “tongue in cheek” and tends to lean towards the lighter side of life. The subject matter is key and mostly figurative with some abstraction happening with certain elements and figures.

With this particular body of work, I aim to highlight the significance of the seemingly mundane, presenting it as worthy of our consideration. Through storytelling, I delve into the luminous and shadowy aspects of our existence, emphasising the importance of courage and embracing uncertainty.

Can you tell us a bit about your style and artistic process?

I explore a diverse array of styles and subjects in my artistic endeavours. My creative process begins with conceptualisation and thorough research. I then capture inspiration through photography and drawing, which I transfer onto canvas or paper.

Finally, I bring my vision to life through painting and other techniques. Occasionally, I’ll take my art to the next level by scanning it, manipulating it in Photoshop, and creating collages. These compositions are then printed onto fabric, which I use to make garments or cushions, adding a unique touch to my process.

Do you have a preferred medium that you like to work in?

I enjoy the blending of photography, textiles, design and painting. This unique fusion brings me lots of joy.

Any local artist that you admire?

So many! Jo Roets, Patrick Bongoy, Willem Pretorius, Dave Robertson and Andre Stead to mention a few.

What does being a part of the Nando’s Creative Exchange Programme mean to you?

I am deeply honoured and excited to be part of the Nando’s Creative Exchange programme. This journey has been truly remarkable, and I am immensely grateful to Nando’s, Spier, and all the individuals involved in making this opportunity a reality. I am eager to expand my horizons, continue learning, and embrace growth as an artist.

How do you feel about mentorship and learning through an experienced industry professional?

Patrick Bongoy has been incredibly supportive and valuable as our mentor. It’s been a pleasure collaborating with him. I’ve realised the importance of professional role models who excel in their field. There’s always room for growth and learning, and I firmly believe that knowledge is power!

Where have you been looking for inspiration for your pieces?

For me, inspiration is a multifaceted phenomenon, drawn from the tapestry of everyday experiences. Whether it’s the rhythm of daily life, the beauty of nature, interactions with people, or the subtle nuances of real-life events, each moment offers a source of creative fuel. Music, dancing, the sprawling vistas of mountain hikes and swimming in the ocean sparks immense inspiration.
