Mpho Vackier is a metallurgical engineer turned interior designer, and a 2017 Design Indaba Emerging Creative, who designs stunning afrocentric furniture for local brand TheUrbanative.
Mpho’s work is inspired by the simplistic and clean functionality of mid-century European furniture designs, which she couples with the colourful geometric patterns found on Ndebele textiles. Her style also encompasses other African cultural signifiers, patterns and graphics, which she translates into contemporary furniture pieces for the modern-day urbanite. Mpho fashions her creations out of wood and steel, with a focus on functionality, aesthetics and African influence.
TheUrbanative is a furniture design brand that boasts a collection of talented multi-disciplinary designers, creators and makers that are all inspired by African ethnic patterns and motifs. They are constantly exploring the avenues through which graphic cultural signifiers can be applied and reinterpreted in order to inspire contemporary, imaginative product designs that are equally as beautiful as they are relatable to the urban citizen. They also offer customisable furniture pieces.
