Moscow Penthouse

WORDS Vanessa McCulloch

If elaborate and ornate describe your dream luxury home, then feast your imagination on this three-storey Moscow penthouse.

There are nine bedrooms and five bathrooms, as well as the expected staff quarters, but it’s details like the in-house elevator and this dressing room above (which would render any fashion-lover speechless) that are the gilded cherries on top. Naturally, in the land of the oligarch, only high-end finishes will do: there are marble, gold leaf, stained glass and chandeliers dripping at every turn.

This apartment boasts 20 windows with panoramic views across the city, looking onto Patriarshy Prudiy (‘Patriarch’s Pond’). Time magazine describes it as ‘a square-shaped pond surrounded by Stalin-era apartments… a piece of Moscow that most outsiders miss and everyone from this place cherishes.’

Located in the most prestigious suburb of the capital, its price tag shouldn’t be surprising. According to Forbes.com, housing in Moscow ‘is very, very expensive [with] prices for apartments comparable to London and New York’. After all, as the Financial Times points out, this is a city where a cup of coffee costs around US$6.
